Local
Area Networks (LAN)
As
computers become more and more an everyday tool the need for companies
to utilise this technology has never been greater. Many companies
benefit from huge savings to their businesses by investing in
computers and networks.
One
of the distinct advantages to using computers is their ability
to connect and share information using a Local Area Network. It
could be that you need to share and transfer documents, accounts,
production control, sales whatever is applicable to your business
computer networks offer major advantages over manual systems.

Using
a network such as the example above, you can share information
between computers. This SHARING of information can utilise the
hard drive space on all the machines on the network. By using
a network all the data shared allows for unattended exchange of
data between one PC and many others. It makes good sense to use
a network for security reasons and it is far easier to back up
your data files particularly if you have important or confidential
information you need to keep.
Your
network has the capability to share printers remotely or separately
in the building and print out wherever you require. If you are
heavily using your printers then the printer should have its own
print server (a small box that connects to the network server
from the printer), making it totally independent from the any
one computer. The cost savings can be significant. Imagine you
have a standard budget printer for five computers, when instead
you could have a high spec performance printer and save on the
other five printers.
As
the standards of Network cabling are improving, you only need
to cable your building ONCE. The same cabling following the CAT5
standard can be used for connecting all your computers, telephones
to your telephone system and integrated to the computer network,
transferring VIDEO and AUDIO data and broadband services such
as Video Conferencing. Again this greatly reduces the cost to
your network, as you do not need separate cabling for other systems
and technology.
